THE PEOPLE OF DISTRICT 5
YOUTH SPOTLIGHT
My name is Marianna Martinez. I'm 16 years old and am currently attending Pueblo High School. I am taking 3 AP classes right now and a DUAL enrollment class and am willing to challenge myself with this rigorous course work. My high school goals are to graduate in the Top 10 of my class and leave an impact on the community at school and outside of academic environments. I enjoy painting, sewing, and making creations with my cricut machine. My career goal is to create a street in South Tucson full of small and local businesses which emphasize culture and community. My greatest accomplishment has been my role as president in my school’s feminist club by fundraising and collaborating with students with a Valentine’s Day carnival and earning $300 to donate to the local Emerge: Against Domestic Violence Shelter.

Proper Shops is a collective of local merchants and artists, located in a historic building downtown, providing booths and spaces for community entrepreneurs to share their creativity. From arts and crafts to vintage clothing, jewelry, and more, there is a wide variety of wares for you to browse! Visit their Instagram to keep up to date!
October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Emerge Center Against Domestic Abuse is one of the organizations who provide critical support and resources to our community. This month, they also honored former D5 Supervisor Elías by dedicating their new office building to him and his legacy of fighting for a safer, better community. Thank you for your commitment to the health, safety, and wellbeing of those in need of your help!
POLICY UPDATES
OCTOBER
Briefing with Congressman Grijalva
Thank you to my favorite Congressman, Raul M. Grijalva, for taking the time to visit Casa Alitas and meet with Pima County’s leaders to discuss the humanitarian situation at the border. Pima County, with Casa Alitas and our Coalition partners, has been doing incredible work to advocate for and ensure that our community and the migrants and refugees coming through the center are safe and healthy.
13th Annual Gabe Zimmerman Scholarship Awards
Celebrating the legacy of Gabe Zimmerman at the 13th Annual Gabe Zimmerman Scholarship Award Luncheon with the ASU School of Social Work - Tucson Component! I can’t think of a more appropriate or fitting tribute to Gabe than to honor six students who are making our world a better and more compassionate place.
American Battery Factory Groundbreaking
Glad to join Governor Katie Hobbs, Pima County, the City of Tucson, state, and public and private sector representatives in welcoming American Battery Factory to our community. When fully operational, it is estimated that they will offer 1000 high-paying, green, sustainable jobs. Prosperity and sustainability are not competing. If done thoughtfully and correctly, they are the economic development ideal.
Pima County Multi-Craft Core Graduation
Congratulations to the very first graduates of the Pima County Multi-Craft Core Curriculum Program at Las Artes Arts and Education Center! This program, the first of its kind in the state, is designed to prepare students for an apprenticeship and career with a local union trade hall with high-paying, in-demand sustainable jobs that serve crucial needs in the community.
24th Annual Ray Davies Luncheon
One of my favorite events of the year is the Educational Enrichment Foundation Ray Davies Lifetime Humanitarian Achievement Award Luncheon. This year’s honoree, Beverley Elliot, is so deserving of recognition and it was a thrill to get to see her celebrate with her friends and family!
Fresh Start 2023
Glad to attending Fresh Start 2023! This is an opportunity for community members to have warrants quashed, speak to employers, access services, and find the potential to change the trajectory of one's life. All of our courts attended, offering the ability to restore civil rights and more, all free of charge. Thanks to Dr. Damond Holt and the organizers and partners for creating this opportunity for our community.
Celebrate SaludArte in District 5
It was a beautiful day in District 5 celebrating the beautiful public art project by Mata Ruda! Thank you to the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona and the Pima County Health Department for organizing this effort! The project focused on telling the story of our community’s recovery from the COVID 19 pandemic.
Indigenous Peoples Day
October 9 was Indigenous Peoples Day! D5 encouraged all Pima County residents to reflect upon the ongoing struggles of Indigenous people to gain greater recognition of their vital and lasting contributions to our cities and towns; our county; our state; and our nation.
